India is the second largest tea exporter. Still only a handful of varieties of teas are available in the stores in India.
Lipton Darjeeling Tea. "Pure Long Leaf Black Tea".
Price: Rs. 126 for 200 gms.
Brew:
- 1 tea-spoon (2 grams) per Cup (100-150 ml) of water.
- 100 Degree C.
- 3-5 minutes.
- Drink plain or add sugar.
Impression:
It's a very aromatic and smooth tea. It took a while before I could appreciate this tea, but a few regular cups a day and comparison sessions with Assam and Nilgiri teas did the trick.
Somewhere around the 4th minute the tea suddenly becomes a little bitter. Better check the tea after first 3 minutes and then every 30 secs, especially if you don't add sugar to your tea.
This is neither a single estate tea nor a single season (1st flush, 2nd flush or autumn flush..) tea. It's a generic, branded 'Darjeeling' tea. It bears the Tea Board's seal saying it is indeed authentic Darjeeling tea.
Price:Rs. 126 for 200 grams. Regular and decent black teas, like Taj, Tata Tea etc cost about 60-75 Rupees for 250 grams here. This looks a bit pricey.... but... let's do a simple math.
A cup of tea needs 2 grams of leaves. So with this pack we can make 100 cups of tea. Rs. 126 for 100 cups => Rs. 1.26 per cup (about 100-150 ml). This way a litre of this tea costs roughly the same as a litre of bottled water. That's cheap, isn't it?
It's in fact difficult to find Darjeeling teas at this price range. Tata Darjeeling is also less expensive. Sorry, forgot to note down my impressions about that tea. Estate specific teas are much much more expensive. 100 grams of Second Flush tea from Avongrove estates (yes, Darjeeling) costed me about Rs. 300 (Still, just Rs. 6 per cup!).
Conclusion:It's a bit sad that our local tea has to come thru an International brand to our house. However, this is a real good tea, definitely great value for money.
